A lot of times, it’s the thing we least suspect that ends up causing the biggest problem. And on Halloween, one of the last things you might be worried about is bugs, squirrels, and pests eating the Jack-o-lantern you and the kids just spent so much care and time carving. But it happens all the time!
At Progressive Pest Control, we can’t think of a scarier Halloween trick. Fortunately, keeping the critters from cramping your pumpkin’s style isn’t too hard.
Check out some of these tried and tested ways to tamp down the Halloween party crashers in your yard this year.
Make Your Pumpkin Carving Last
If you’ve carved a pumpkin before, you are fully aware that no Jack-o-lantern lasts forever. But it’s fun to keep them around as long as possible. Jack-o-lanterns are fun but the down side is we’re not the only ones who like them. Bugs, rodents, and other pests might see your beautifully ghoulish pumpkin and shriek for joy at finding a free lunch. Keeping them away to appreciate from a distance is easy, though.
First, only put your pumpkin out as the sun goes down and bring it back inside before you go to bed. This limits the time your Jack-o-lantern is exposed. Second, use a citronella candle to light your spooky carving. The scent is a natural pest control, plus it smells great! You can also spritz the inside of your carved pumpkin with diluted bleach. Make sure to only use about a teaspoon of bleach to a gallon of water, though. Any more could have an opposite effect.
